Martes y trece! Today is Tuesday the 13th, considered an unlucky day in Spain, the equivalent of our feelings about Friday 13th. But we’re not in Spain, so we should be okay. I was always told we feel that way about Friday 13th because Friday was the day Christ was crucified. No-one has given me a suitable explanation for Tuesday 13th.
At one point in our zoom Italian conversation class yesterday afternoon our teacher had to go and close doors as the noise of rain falling in her patio was preventing her from hearing anything. One of the class was extremely jealous; she has an allotment which desperately needs some rain. Later in the afternoon a friend who lives on the other side of Manchester posted a video of the torrential rain falling in her garden. Through all of this we had blue sky and sunshine.
After we had eaten, Phil and I had planned to go for a walk round the village. Its one of the joys of longer evenings and, besides, it’s good for your digestion. It was then that the clouds moved in, quite dark and threatening. Storms were forecast and so we decided not to risk getting caught in a downpour and opted to forego our walk. Wrong decision! There was no rain here yesterday after all. The storm, if storm there was, must have passed us by. Granddaughters Number One and Number Two are both complaining that they are melting, Number one because her house gets very hot and Number Two because she is currently working in Manchester and has to travel on the tram twice a day. “It’s like canned sardines, but boiling hot”, she says.
As for me, I’m quite enjoying the sunny weather!
Meanwhile, further south they are having the usual hot weather problems:
“Thousands of easyJet passengers flying to and from Gatwick have had their flights cancelled due to storms in the last 24 hours.
More than 54 of the budget carrier’s flights scheduled for Sunday evening did not operate due to what the airport described as “intense thunderstorms” in the area after the weekend heat.
The airline cancelled a similar number on Monday due to the knock-on effects, with planes out of position for the day’s flights.
About 15,000 passengers on easyJet – by far the largest carrier at the airport – are understood to be affected. The airport has warned travellers to check before departure as further weather issues are forecast.”
21st century First World problems!
And we seem to be ignoring the environmental problems. According to this article there has been an increased demand for electricity as homes and businesses switch on the air-conditioning. Since when did we have so much air-conditioning in this country? There has not been enough wind to provide much wind-generated electricity. What is the solution? Start up the coal fired plants, apparently! What happened to solar power? Surely the solar panels must be generating like fury at the moment!
I must check that with a friend who has solar panels on her roof and is usually inordinately proud of how much power she generates.
So it goes!
Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
