When books and real life coincide.

Things may have calmed down somewhat at the airport in Kabul today but there are still masses of people trying to get out of the country. The world waits to see what the next step will be.

We’ve been watching The Handmaid’s Tale, showing what a fundamentalist Christian state could be like. In this latest series, June, aka Offred, is now in Canada but still trying to locate and extricate her daughter, taken from her when she was deemed an unsuitable mother but suitably fertile to become a “handmaid”. All these actions in a dystopian society based loosely, vaguely on biblical grounds. It’s interesting that Commander Fred Waterford, having been arrested and taken to Canada, now wants his son to grow up in freedom. Similarly, his wife, Serena Joy, does not want to return to Gilead, where she will be put on trial, because now that she is pregnant and therefore proven to be fertile but no longer a righteous member of society, her child could be taken from her and she could be forced to be a handmaid. Oddly enough, things that were fine when done to others turn out not to be good if they might be done to you!

I think we have only one episode left of series 4. So now we wait to find out what will happen to the various protagonists.

Art reflecting life reflecting art.

And all our worries about lockdowns and restrictions and puppies being stolen and then sold for huge amounts of money fade into insignificance.

Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
