Rain. The benefits (or not) of exercise. Responding to floods. Controlling planning.

I woke up at 7.00 this morning to the sound of heavy rain. My alarm was set for 8.00. I reset it for a little later, rolled over and went back to sleep. I wanted to give the weather a chance to clear up before I considered going out for a run. Not that I was even thinking of going out for a run at 7.00 in the morning. Not even with lighter, brighter mornings!

By the time my alarm rang the rain had stopped but it was still cloudy. Not a problem. I donned my running waterproof just in case and set off.

On a radio news programme yesterday an expert was saying that beyond a certain exercise does not help you lose weight. Apparently they did some experiments in the USA, measuring levels of something or other in people who exercise regularly and those who don’t exercise at all. There was no difference! It seems that the body adjusts how it absorbs the we ingest and uses fewer of those calories if you exercise regularly. Well! Really!? That sounds like cheating on the body’s part! He was quick to add that exercising regularly is good for our physical and medical health. He didn’t want people to stop exercising, after all. You just shouldn’t rely on it as a remedy to overeating. In the end the only remedy is to eat less and to cut out processed food!

There you go!

Yesterday I speculated as to whether or not Bruce Springsteen would go ahead with his concert in Ferrara, Italy, considering that Emilia-Romagna was having bad floods. Well, the answer seem to be yes, the concert went ahead as planned. However, the Boss has come in for some criticism: lack of respect for the people who had to leave their homes or even died in the floods; the difficulties people had getting to Ferrara because of flood-related travel problems and so on. But it seems that the city of Ferrara was not so badly hit with flooding as other places in the region. And it’s likely there would have been more chaos with fans turning up to a cancelled concert, not knowing when/if it would be rescheduled, where they could stay, how they would have to rearrange their onward travel and so on. Life is complicated for the Boss and he probably can’t do right for trying. So it goes.

As conspiracy theories abound and stories spread about our lives being controlled, here’s a quotation I came across from writer Ray Bradbury, possibly from his book “Fahrenheit 451”:

“My uncle says the architects got rid of the front porches because they didn't look well. But my uncle says that was merely rationalizing it; the real reason, hidden underneath, might be they didn't want people sitting like that, doing nothing, rocking, talking; that was the wrong kind of social life. People talked too much. And they had time to think. So they ran off with the porches. And the gardens, too. Not many gardens any more to sit around in. And look at the furniture. No rocking chairs any more. They're too comfortable. Get people up and running around.” ~Ray Bradbury

Food for thought!

Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
