A fine day out. Buying a house - maybe! Earwigging royalists! Buying knitting yarn - definitely!

This was supposed to be posted on Wednesday. It was only yesterday I discovered it had not posted at all, for some reason, but was still in draft form. So here goes: -

Today I have been on an odd sort of day out with Granddaughter Number One. We have been trying to find a house for her to buy, partly to escape the neighbours from hell who disturb her sleep with the family screaming matches they have, partly because the house she is currently tenting is not really suitable. She has a deposit saved up and so a family effort has gone into finding somewhere to her liking and within her budget.

Today it was my turn to accompany her to look at a house. Her chronic anxiety makes it difficult for her to deal with such stuff on her own. We had already planned an outing for today as she has some time off work this week. So when my daughter arranged this viewing for today, it was just one more thing on our list of things to do.

So I got up and went to the market in Uppermill as usual, but on foot rather than by bicycle. Then I caught a bus to her house, dumped my market shopping and off we went in a taxi. The taxi got a little lost, in part because the address had no post code for him to put in his satnav and also because the road is new enough not to feature on older maps and phone apps. We got there in the end so all was good. It was a nice house. Some decisions need to be taken now. That’s the hard part.

After that we got back to the original project of our day out. Granddaughter Number One, as I may have mentioned before, has taken up knitting. Knitting has been acknowledged as an excellent form of therapy for those suffering from chronic anxiety and other forms of depression. It seems to work. She takes her knitting almost everywhere and has so far produced two sweaters for herself as well as gloves for almost everyone she knows. For some time now we have been noticing the regular presence of a small van labeled Woolyknits, parked fairly close to the pub next door to our house. More recently it has been adorned with a notice advertising their yarn shop in nearby Diggle. We wanted to investigate. That was the focus of our day out.

We caught a bus from close to where we had viewed the possible house but it only went as far as Uppermill. On arriving in Uppermill we debated whether to continue walking from there to Diggle, maybe a mile down the road, or wait five minutes for another bus. We went for the second option, which was perhaps a mistake as an opinionated royalist was loudly holding court to her companions. She quite liked Charles and Camilla. Camilla, she explained was the love of Charles’ life but she would  not wait for him to finish military service in the army, or was it the navy? or the airforce? or all three? (That would explain all the medals!) and married Parker-Bowles. (My aside: would he have been allowed to marry a ‘commoner’ back in the 1970s?) He probably, she went on, deep down wants to mlet William be king. William and Kate would (eventually will be) be a lovely king and queen, she opined, but not like THE QUEEN. She had wept when THE QUEEN died. On and on it loudly went!

Goodness! If the bus had not arrived at that point we would have had to start walking!

But the bus arrived. We went to Diggle. We found the Woolyknit shop and discovered that the owner is a near neighbour of mine. Hence the frequent presence of their van close to my house.

The shop is a veritable Aladdin’s cave of brightly coloured yarns of different kinds. Granddaughter Number One was delighted to find that the wool is cheaper in the shop than online and bought quite a lot of it.

Then we went a had a well-deserved bit of lunch before making our way back to a bus stop to wait for a bus to her house. There I collected my shopping and made my way homewards.

A generally satisfactory day in the sunshine!

Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
