It’s very blustery out there today. The waves are rolling in nicely. I even extended my windy run to go and have a slightly closer look … but not too close!
We usually sleep with the window just slightly open but in the middle of the night we had to close it fully as it was too noisy. Such wind is not unusual - many of the trees around here have an eastward lean, clearly pushed by the wind off the Atlantic.
By the time we had breakfast, the rain had moved in, torrentially!
Yesterday lunchtime we tested the cheap and cheerful Prime Coffee, which should have been open on Monday but wasn’t. It was open but unfortunately theu didn’t have the hake fillets that we remembered from last year. Sp Phil opted for what should have been pork chops but disappointingly turned out to be rather tough chunks of pork. Generous portions of chips and rice though. It seems to be a Portuguese thing to serve chips AND rice. I talked them into making me a small salad.

This one is called Wildflowers.
I came across this piece about Max Yasgur, whose farm Joni Mitchell sang about (I’m going down to Yasgur’s farm, going to join in a rock ‘n’ roll band) in her song “Woodstock”.
“When his neighbors told him they'd never buy from him again if he let the hippies come, Max Yasgur looked at his wife—and she knew he was all in.
August 1969. Bethel, New York.
Max Yasgur was a 49-year-old dairy farmer who'd spent his entire life building something real in the Sullivan County hills. Six hundred acres of pasture land. A herd of prize cattle. A reputation as a fair dealer and a tended my windy run to go and have a look a t them.good neighbor.
Then some kids from New York City asked if they could use his field for a music festival.
The town meeting was brutal. Neighbors who'd known Max for decades told him flat out: permit this festival, and we'll boycott your farm. No one will buy your milk. No one will do business with you. You'll be finished.
His wife Miriam watched her husband's face as they delivered the ultimatum.
And she saw something shift.
"That's when I knew," she'd say later, "Max was absolutely going to do it."
Because Max Yasgur was the kind of man who got more stubborn the harder you pushed. And because, somewhere deep in his dairy-farmer soul, he believed young people had the right to gather peacefully, even if they had long hair and listened to music he didn't understand.
Four hundred thousand people showed up to Woodstock.
They trampled his fields. Destroyed his fences. Left his pastures looking like a muddy war zone. The damage to his farm was catastrophic.
But during the festival, something remarkable happened. Max walked out onto that stage—a middle-aged Jewish farmer in work clothes, standing before the largest gathering of young people in American history—and he said:
"The important thing that you've proven to the world is that half a million kids—and I call you kids because I have children who are older than you are—a half million young people can get together and have three days of fun and music and have nothing but fun and music, and I God Bless You for it!"
They gave him a standing ovation that lasted several minutes.
Then reality set in.
The postmaster refused to serve them. They had to change their mailing address to a neighboring town just to receive letters—including the thank-you notes and flowers that performers like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and The Who sent to express gratitude for his courage.
The general store turned him away. Decades-long friendships evaporated overnight. On January 7, 1970, his neighbors sued him for property damage caused by festival attendees.
Max never flinched.
"As far as I know," he told reporters who asked if he'd host another festival, "I'm going back to running a dairy farm."
Over a year later, he received a $50,000 settlement for the near-destruction of his property. It wasn't enough. It couldn't replace what he'd lost—not the physical damage, but the community that had turned its back on him for refusing to hate young people.
In 1971, Max sold the farm that had been his life's work. He and Miriam moved to Marathon, Florida, hoping maybe a fresh start would be easier on his heart—the physical one that was wearing down, and the metaphorical one that had been broken by his own neighbors.
On February 9, 1973, just a year and a half after leaving New York, Max Yasgur died of a heart attack. He was 53 years old.
Rolling Stone magazine gave him one of the few full-page obituaries they'd ever run for someone who wasn't a musician. Because Max Yasgur had done something that mattered: he'd stood between young people and the forces that wanted to silence them.
Today, the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts sits on that field where half a million young people proved that peace was possible. Every summer since 1996, people gather at Max's former homestead to remember—not just the music, but the man who made it possible.
His neighbors thought they were punishing him by turning their backs.
They didn't understand that Max Yasgur had already chosen which side of history he wanted to stand on.
He chose the kids with flowers in their hair over the adults with stones in their hearts.
He chose music over silence.
He chose standing alone with his principles over standing with a crowd that wanted him to betray them.
And when those 400,000 young people stood and applauded him on that muddy hillside in 1969, Max Yasgur received something more valuable than his neighbors' approval:
He received the gratitude of a generation that would never forget the farmer who gave them a field and asked for nothing but that they prove peace was possible.
They did.
And so did he.”
Good for Maz Yasgur! Shame on his intolerant neighbours! And would that spontaneity be permitted in Trump’s USA?
