Cooler weather. Looking at the fort. Looking for the sea, which used to be a lot closer.

The weather might have taken a turn for the worse. It’s certainly cooler than it has been over the last few days. I even put a jacket on to walk along the beach yesterday afternoon. And this morning I was back in my warmer running top to run along the seafront.

Thankfully, however, we’ve not yet seen the rain that has been falling again in south and east Spain. Schools in Malaga and Granada provinces have been closed and people living close to rivers have been evacuated. This is not natural!

When I went walkabout yesterday afternoon, I first went to the fortress again. The Forte de Santa Catarina was built, according to the notice outside it, at the end of the 16th century, along with a fortress at nearby Buarcos, protecting the port and the bay. It looks very small now with all the tall hotels and apartment blocks along the sea front. Yet it apparently contains a chapel, two barracks and a lighthouse. You can see the dome of the chapel and the lighthouse is still there. How did they fit two barracks in there though? They must have been very squashed!

I also took a look at the Figueira fig tree, very bedraggled in its autumnal state.

It does seem to have at least a couple still hanging on in there though.

Presumably that lighthouse used to serve when the sea came closer to the shore, as old photos show.

It’s a long way out to the sea nowadays. But I walked out along the boardwalks and across the sand to find the sea. Still there. There was little else to see though.

Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
