This morning it was quite hard pulling myself out of bed. This is really nothing new. I seem to be growing lazier as time goes by. But after snoozing my alarm twice, I did eventually get up and run around the village.
When I was half way round my phone rang: my daughter! I was expecting it as we had half an arrangement to go to Marks And Spencer’s together. We tried to meet somewhere along my running route but our paths must have crossed either too early or too late - we missed each other.
So she walked round the village without meeting me and arrived back at my house as I finished showering. Good timing! We eventually managed to have coffee and toast before setting off on a shopping trip. We were in two minds about our destination: Manchester or Ashton, both of which have a Marks and Spencer store.
In the end we opted for Ashton, where we took in Sainsbury’s and IKEA as well and M&S. all the shops are decked out with spooky stuff for Hallowe’en. Equally all the shops have shelves laden with Christmas stuff: Christmas clothing, Christmas food, Christmas decorations, Christmas wrapping paper. We were very strong and did not buy mince pies. It’s still far too early!
It’s fortunate we decided not to go into Manchester centre, and especially not on the tram. Apparently a bus and tram have had a head-on collision in Piccadilly Gardens today. It’s a very busy place. Quite a lot of tram lines have been cancelled, including the one which goes to Ashton. I’m rather surprised it has not happened before.
Out in the wider world of conflict, it seems that Israel has killed a Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar. People like United States President Biden are heralding this is an event that raises “the prospect of a ceasefire” and “represents a moment of justice”.
We’ll have to wait and see if anything positive comes of it.
Journalist Jonathan Freedland does not seem very optimistic.
Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
