Football has come home, as they say. But the women had to do it. The England Women’s football team defeated Germany in the Euros. The most watched programme ever, one news report said. Today has seen a lot of celebration. There is talk of aiming for the world championship now. There is also talk of honours. Imagine, a football team full of dames! We shall see!
Male footballers still earn lots more money though. Looking back through history, people on the news programmes have been commenting on the huge crowds who used to go to watch women football early in the 20th century. Then the FA decided it should be a male preserve. At least I think that’s what happened.
Less than 2/3 of school offer girls’ football on the curriculum. Only a minority offer it as an extra-curricular activity. So there’s a lot of catching up to be done. Will it happen? Or is this success a flash in the pan? We shall see! Personally, I was never bothered about playing football but I have had a number of female students who have been keen players in their local teams.
We’ve had a day of crafting today. My daughter wanted to spend a morning sorting put her classroom ready for next term. The small boy was in nursery. The small girl fancied a morning of grandma time without her small brother trying to join in the complicated stuff she wanted to do. So the small girl and I painted watercolours of flowers, made cakes, made complicated pictures involving drawing and colouring fish and then decorating them with glued-on sequins before cutting them put and sticking them onto a pre-prepared underwater sea scene. In between times we hung out washing, ran the garden and played imaginative games. On the whole a productive day. When mummy came back we all went for a walk. I am quite worn out!
Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
