It’s another August Sunday. It was fine when I ran round the village first thing. Later it rained copiously once again but then the sun came out and so I optimistically hung washing out to dry in the garden. We’ll see how that goes!
Yesterday we went out “snipping” - Phil with his secateurs removing aggressive nettles and brambles which obstruct the footpaths - in the late afternoon sunshine, which later turned briefly into evening rain. This is the pattern of our Northwest of England August weather.
As more and more adverts appear for electric vehicles, we came across this description of “the car” in Peter Hitchen’s blog:
“The car, by its nature, cannot obtain mains electric power. So it must either be powered by a crude mechanism of controlled explosions, fuelled by dangerous gloop imported from despotisms, or by immensely heavy , short-life batteries which use electricity very inefficiently.”
I was reminded of a cartoon I saw recently, but for some reason neglected to copy. It showed a petrol-driven car with the caption “dirty travel” (or something similar) above a picture of an electric car driving past an obviously polluting power station, with the caption “clean travel”. We have a long way to go but I am seeing more cars parked on driveways obviously plugged in to a battery charging device snaking into the house. Of course, that only works for those who can afford to pay for the electricity. Still needs work, I think!
Meanwhile there is other stuff that the rich get excited about, such as Musk and Zuckerberg having a cage-fight. Who came up with that idea. I keep hearing what a good sport cage-fighting is. Is that really so? Anyway, apparently Messrs Musk and Suckerberg are having a bit of a fight (not in a cage) with the Italian government over where to stage the contest. They want it to have a classical setting. When I first heard this I assumed they were aiming for the coliseum but it seems that the mayor of Rome has turned round and said it won’t take place in their city! Surely there are better ways for rich people to make a splash in the world.
Now, I hear that yet another boat has gone down in the Channel. And I came across this on social media:
“Don’t let people forget.
The French government has repeatedly offered to build a refugee processing centre for the UK in France, they have offered to help fund it and allow British immigration staff to work there.
It would instantly solve the “boats” problem.
The UK refused.”
I looked back at reports on the press. Back in 2021 there were reports of such an offer from Emmanuel Macron. But Downing street rejected any plans that would pull more migrants to the UK.
Maybe they just want to continue saying earnestly that they want to stop the boats because it sounds very good!
Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
