The new kid on the block!

Here are some reactions to Liz Truss becoming prime minister:

Craig Murray wrote in his blog:

“So now the Queen swears in the fourth Tory Prime Minister, and does it in Scotland, a nation where the Tories have been overwhelmingly rejected by the electorate throughout this period (and indeed, for seven decades). A Prime Minister elected by 80,000 people mostly in South East England, to govern 66,000,000 throughout the UK, receives office from an old woman, elected by nobody, dwelling in a castle.”

A friend of mine shared the post of someone called Clive Savage:

“The £130 billion Liz Truss is about to hand energy companies could build enough wind farms to power 10 million houses with free energy for 30 years.”

Kate Osborne MP tweeted:

“Liz Truss plan is to give energy suppliers more money to reduce bills - then make you pay it back with a levy on your bills for the next 10 to 20 years!

Why are ‘t we making these companies absorb the costs from their BILLIONS in profits?”

Central Bylines posted:

“We are now on our 5th Education Secretary in a year, each one getting a quarter of their salary as a nice payoff.

Michelle Donelan received £16,876.25 of our money for two days in the role.”

This last really annoys me. There are people being rewarded for leaving a job they did not necessarily do well. Some of them should be fined instead! And, by the way, do the civil servants and advisers get similar rewards? They are often the ones who do the work.

Yesterday the new PM faced her first Prime Minister’s Questions. There was a lot of cheering and shouting from Conservative MPs. The general consensus seems to be that she did better than expected and that Kier Starmer will need to work on his quick riposte routine if he is to match her. I didn’t watch it. The whole circus drives me crazy. I can’t say I was greatly impressed by the excerpts I saw but the media seem to have changed from regarding her a bit of dimwit to praising her to the skies. We’ll see how that progresses.

Meanwhile, out in the real world children have been going back to school and proud parents’ have been posting photos of their offspring in their smart new school uniform - my daughter included! She clearly does not share my aversion school uniform. And reports are coming in of silly rules that need to be abided by. The socks youngsters wear are being being criticised and some are getting into trouble some having the “wrong” kind of bag. I ask you! Starting secondary school can be scary - suddenly you go from being the “big kid” in your primary school to the “little kid” in an often much bigger secondary school. Getting a detention for uniform matters in your first week makes it worse.

Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
