At the risk of repeating things I wrote yesterday, here is something I saw in this morning’s Guardian:
“Israel has threatened to resume fighting in Gaza after Hamas announced that it could not return any further remains of deceased Israeli hostages without specialist recovery equipment that is needed to retrieve the rest from the ruins of the devastated territory.”
Here’s a link to an article about a couple who had their bank account closed suddenly and unexpectedly. They did at least get a check for the amount of money involved but even so, it seems a bit odd to have your account not just frozen but actually closed without consulting you. They think it may be because of their pro-Palestine activism. Is this what then future holds for us?
Over in the USA JD Vance has been brushing off racist and sexist texts sent in a Republican group chat as unimportant. He dismisses this as the sort of thing that kids get up to:
“The reality is that kids do stupid things, especially young boys,” Vance said. “They tell edgy, offensive jokes. That’s what kids do. And I really don’t want us to grow up in a country where a kid telling a stupid joke – telling a very offensive, stupid joke – is cause to ruin their lives.”
In fact he advises his own sons not to put such things on social media, even if they maybe make such jokes among their friends! A rather dubious life-philosophy. More worrying to me is that the “kids” referred to are in the 23 - 35 age group, surely old enough to know better! At that age you could be a school teacher, influencing young minds with your bad jokes!
This post is going out rather late because I have been busy with the family all day, well, almost all day. I got up and ran as usual, did the washing and hung it out to dry, did some tidying up and so on. And the Granddaughter Number Two turned up. On Thursdays she travels to York to attend classes for her Masters Degree and then joins us for tea in the late afternoon on her return. Today she got up at a silly time, walked to the railways station to catch a train at something past 6, only to find it was cancelled. All later trains were also cancelled. So she went home. And later in the morning she turned up at our house.
We set the world to rights. Then we went to collect her small siblings from school. Her older sister and her mother joined us later. After tea my daughter took her father to chess club and came back for a family chat.
And suddenly the evening was almost over.
So here is a late Thursday post.
Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
