I have optimistically hung washing out to dry in the garden. I shall keep a keen eye out for the rain which is forecast for later in the day. Some witty person commented the other day that we have reached the time of year in the North West of England when it’s no longer really possible to dry the washing outdoors but neither is it yet time to switch on the central heating, which means that draping stuff over radiators to dry is not really an option. Consequently the North West of England is condemned to dampness until the middle of November!
Thinking of condemning, Yvette Cooper recently wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
"The UK condemns Israel’s strikes on Doha, which are a flagrant violation of Qatar’s sovereignty, and risk setting back negotiations for a ceasefire, which is the only way to achieve lasting peace. "
Michael Rosen suggests that this needs a new entry in the dictionary:
'Condemn (verb) [new meaning]: to state that you disapprove while doing all you can to support.'
Indeed!
25 people were arrested and 26 police officers were injured in yesterday’s demonstration in London. This makes an interesting contrast to the much larger (almost 900) number of people arrested and the much smaller (0) number of police officers injured in demonstrations against the banning of Palestine Action.
When Trevor Phillips asked Business and Trade secretary Peter Kyle on Sky News this morning if the demonstration – organised by far-right activist Tommy Robinson – “disturbed” him, he replied:
“It doesn’t disturb me, because it’s actually proof that we live in a country where free speech, free association, is alive and well.”
That so many people supported Tommy Robinson didn’t bother him apparently. He went on:
“The bit that disturbs me is that when a minority go to an extreme and end up perpetrating violence against the police. That is unacceptable and those people should and will pay for it”.
Well, they have so far arrested 25 of them!
Elon Musk appeared by video link and advised that we need to dissolve parliament and have a fresh election. His own country by contrast seems to be fine (?!). There is some confusion about the political affiliations of the young man who seems to have confessed to killing Charlie Kirk. On the one hand he is seen as a staunch republican, or at any rate his parents are, but on the other hand Utah’s governor, Spencer Cox, said: “It’s very clear to us and to investigators that this was a person who was deeply indoctrinated with leftist ideology.”
I wasn’t aware that “leftist ideology” included going out and shooting people.
In the grand tradition of politicians making use of pop songs, it seems that Tommy Robinson (can he be called a politician?) has (mis)appropriated a song by the band James’s hit song in a protest video.
Tim Booth said he was “disgusted” that the alternative rock band’s single Sit Down had been played without their permission, as he believed the song was “the antithesis” of the far-right activist’s movement.
More frivolously, I seem to be ahead of the game fashion-wise because I have long favoured the wearing of white shirts. According to this article, white shirts are “the thing”!
Even more frivolously, here are some photos reworked by someone called
Robin Yayla, a visual artist and illustrator based in Milan, Italy, who blends photography with playful digital illustrations.
Commentary tells us:
Through his unique blend of travel-inspired photography and imaginative illustration, Robin Yayla continues to captivate audiences worldwide, reminding us to find wonder in the ordinary.”
I have commented before on Gen Z getting into manual arts as a way of relaxing and reducing stress and tension. Granddaughter Number One is a prime example. So this quotation and accompanying illustration is dedicated to her.,
"Mortals can't knit; it's too complicated. Anyone you encounter knitting is probably a goddess.”
