Last night there was a full moon. All week I watched the moon’s progress towards fullness. Bright and clear it stood out against a cloudless sky. So last night, as is usual around here whenever there is a significant celestial event, it was intermittently cloudy. Of course!
And despite all the fuss about this being a pink moon, it was definitely not pink. It seems the April full moon is called the pink moon because it coincides with the time when a certain type of flower, pink in colour of course, comes into bloom somewhere in the USA. Which does not explain why we still call in a pink moon here in the UK. Lunacy!
Thinking of lunacy, here is something from Michael Rosen:
“I wrote a satire about how babies and children in Gaza were a danger for the state of Israel. I put it in one of my King and Tutor dialogues.
At the time, I thought it was a bit over the top but satire allows you to exaggerate sometimes, I thought.
This week, I've seen several clips of people saying that very thing: the problem with Palestinian babies and children is that they grow up.
I keep thinking we've reached the bottom. I keep thinking that it's not possible to get any lower.
Then we get lower.”
And here’s some more Michael Rosen:
“If the last remaining people of Gaza flee, there will be people explaining to us that Israel didn't drive out the people of Gaza, they left. And that's why we went in to mop up what's left. And no, the people of Gaza can't come back. Two reasons: they left. And it's our ancestral lands, anyway. Someone we invented called 'God' gave them to us. It's written down in a book that we wrote, so it must be true.
Sorted.”
And yet more:
“We demonstrate too near to synagogues.
Apparently.
No respect for places of worship.
Apparently.
(In fact, the PSC were asking to demonstrate several hundred yards from a synagogue and not 'past' it or 'opposite' it, or 'outside' it nor in anyway demonstrating against it or in opposition to it. You can't see the synagogue from where the demonstration was going to be. It's round two corners from there.)
In Gaza, the IDF (or the airforce) destroy places of worship.
In terms of column inches:
a claim that the PSC wanted to demonstrate outside a place of worship is many times worse than destroying a place of worship.
There must be a place-of-worship league table somewhere.”
Then there is the business of peerages. As a result of Rishi Sunak no longer being Prime Minister and honours being handed out, rewards I suppose, we now have Sir Michael Gove, Sir Jeremy Hunt and Sir James Cleverly. Maybe it’s time we reviewed the system. Perhaps a simple “Thank You” card could be enough along with a bunch of flowers or a bottle of wine!
Besides all these Sirs don’t seem to be making any difference to our oddly lawless society. Here’s a link to a report of the increasing incidence of thefts of “luxury” foods such as smoked salmon, specialist cheese or jamón serrano! This is not just thefts of items from a supermarket but scammers who order in bulk, pretending to be genuine purchasers and then disappearing into the ether. And here’s a link to a report about rewilding, a noble enterprise no doubt but not when animals are randomly released into parts of the country with no monitoring of what happens next.
Strange world!
Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
