The weatherman promised us sunny intervals today. So far - half way through the day - they have not materialised. Another grey day!
Oin Australia, where, of course, it is summer, I read that a debate is going on about ‘revealing swimwear’. Greater Sydney council wants to ban certain types of swimwear. As ever there is an outcry about this targeting women more than men. “Australia had a long history of policing women’s bodies, cultural expert Lauren Rosewarne said, and summertime conversations about appropriate swimwear provide “a legitimacy to looking at women in small bathing suits”.
Rosewarne, an associate professor in the University of Melbourne’s school of social and political sciences, added that women’s bodies and attire had been a source for public debate in a way that didn’t happen with men.”
Thongs and g-strings appear to be at the centre of the debate. Personally I don’t understand the desire to expose one’s buttocks to public view, but that’s just my opinion. However, as a woman who wore the skimpiest of mini-skirts in my early twenties, I think I have the right to that opinion. I’m not a prude; I just have certain aesthetic standards!
Adverts pop up all the time when you trawl the internet. One of the latest I saw was for a dress costing £145. I recognise that this might seem quite reasonable in a world where you can pay thousands of pounds for items of clothing, but it seems a tad excessive to me. Then I read about someone who was looking for a wedding dress. She had budgeted £1,500 but was finding that the dress she really liked would cost £2,200!
Now, I know that most people plan on getting married only once and want to make the day special but spending so much money on a dress to be worn only once is a little silly. Especially as such a dress is usually too impractical for anything but a wedding day. As it happens the wedding-dress seeker in this case, found her dress on Vinted for £550 pounds! A bargain, apparently! And she would be able to sell it on Vinted after the big day! Such is modern life!
Finding bargains on second-hind (pre-loved) clothing sites and in charity shops is all the rage at the moment. However, according to this article secondhand shopping is just as bad in the long run as shopping for brand new stuff.
Shopping itself can be addictive. And nowadays it’s hard to avoid temptation because, as I said earlier, the adverts pop up all over the place. So it goes!
Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
