Today began misty and cold. The sun keeps making feeble attempts to break through.
It’s that odd post-Christmas Day and pre-New Year time when nothing much seems to go on … unless you want to go shopping again as everywhere seems to start sales earlier and earlier. According to this article, fewer people went rushing to the shops on Boxing Day than usually happens. Maybe people feel they have spent enough already. Personally I’ve never quite understand the desire to go and do more shopping immediately Christmas Day is done. Do they all buy bargains ready for next Christmas?
My daughter has suggested a family walk and so I am waiting for her to let me know they are on their way here or whether she wants me to meet them somewhere en route. The walk she has proposed, over the fields and up to a local reservoir, has been deemed dull and boring by Phil, who has another idea in mind, involving the local forest walk. They can fight it out when she arrives.
They’ve been killing journalists again in Gaza. Here’s a BBC report from yesterday:
“A Palestinian TV channel says five of its journalists have been killed in an Israeli strike in the central Gaza Strip.
They were in a Quds Today van parked outside al-Awda hospital, where the wife of one of the journalists was about to give birth, in the central Nuseirat refugee camp.
The channel posted a video of what it said was the burning vehicle with "press" signage on the back doors.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had targeted "Islamic Jihad operatives posing as journalists" and that steps were taken to avoid harming civilians.
The BBC has not been able to verify claims made by either side, with international media being prevented by Israel from entering and freely working on the ground in Gaza.”
And here’s Michael Rosen’s King and his tutor on the same topic area:
'What do you think of scribes, tutor?' said the King to his tutor.
'Some of them are good, some of them are bad,' said the King's tutor.
'Fair enough,' said the King.
'No,' said the tutor, 'not fair enough.'
'How do you mean?' said the King.
'As I said,' said the tutor, 'some of them are bad,'
'Well,' said the King, 'if they're bad, they're bad. So what? If they're bad, no will bother to read them.'
'And that's where you're wrong,' said the tutor, ' a bad scribe is not a scribe who writes badly. A bad scribe is a scribe who makes us look bad.'
'Ah,' said the King, 'I hadn't thought of that. So is there anything we should do about these bad scribes?'
'Yes,' said the tutor.
'What?' said the King.
'Kill them,' said the tutor.
'O,' said the King, 'won't people object?'
'Of course,' said the tutor.
'So what do we do about that?' said the King.
'We say they were enemy soldiers,' said the tutor, 'and we're allowed to kill them.'
'Ah yes,' said the King, 'that makes sense.'
'Glad you see it that way,' said the tutor.
It doesn’t bode well for peace talks!
Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
