MPs (and former PMs) and what they earn. Wood smoke. Prudish acting. Masculine self control.

In this time of strikes because people can’t afford to live decently, a time of food banks and people at the end of their tether, comes the information that Boris Johnson has received earnings, hospitality and donations worth more than £5m. He may have broken a rule about not taking paid employment for three months after leaving office but that sort of thing appears to be par for the course with this lot.

I keep hearing what a witty and entertaining speaker he is. I’ve never heard him make an after-dinner speech but every time I have heard him going on to parliament or in interview I can’t say I have been impressed. Mind you I could say the same about the leader of the Labour Party.

Add to this a headline from today’s Metro, sent to me by a friend:

MPs to get a payrise from April 1 taking salaries to over £86,000.

It seems a little unfair!

At the risk of repeating myself, here’s some more stuff about wood-burning stoves

As we’ve been out and about recently I keep seeing neat piles of logs in people’s gardens. If the stove police swoop I wonder what these people will do with their wood piles.

Now here’s some more nonsense from the acting fraternity: proper kissing during filming is causing problems, problems like not taking place but being films almost to the point of contact and then being filled in with CGI. Goodness! At the height of the pandemic, such kisses as were being filmed were done in some cases with a perspex screen between the kissers, the screen then being airbrushed out. Or whatever the technique is. In other cases, the spouse of one one of the kissers would be brought in for the actual close-up kiss. All that was understandable then and I suppose some people are still afraid of making that physical contact and exchanging bodily fluids. The reasoning of an actor I’ve never heard of, Kirk Cameron, takes the biscuit in my opinion though. I hear that in his fleet of Christian movies (Christian movies?!) Kirk Cameron will only ever kiss his wife – even if she has to dress up as his co-star – “so as to not destroy the foundations of their marriage”. Kissing someone on screen or on stage surely down’e count as infidelity. This is what acting is all about. The clue is in the terminology!

Of course it is possible that he considers himself (or knows himself) to be  so weak-willed that even one acting kiss will lead him to betray his spouse. That would fit in with all the legislation in some religions about women needing to cover their hair, or indeed their whole body, in order not to put temptation in men’s way. Similarly, rape victims can be criticised for leading men on because they dress provocatively. It’s odd that men who, for example, exercise in figure-hugging (muscle-hugging) sports wear or even remove their shirts in public on hot days, revealing their manly chests, are not dragged away by women who cannot resist and must have their wicked way with them.

Okay, I exaggerate but there is a grain of truth in there. Men need to learn self-control - not all men, but some men - and men who make rules need to understand this.

That’s all.

Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
