On telling the truth! Paying the price. Childcare. Modern life.

I learnt a new word yesterday: maw-worm. In fact it’s an old word, from the 19th century, and means “one who insists that they have done nothing wrong despite evidence to the contrary”.

Now, I wonder who that would describe! Hmm!

On that subject, here’s a different sort of Michael Rosen post, different from his usual mock-Boris tweets:

“Having denied it several times, our two kittens have admitted that they stole the poppadom but they refuse to resign. They say they've got work to do, scratching the side of the sofa and keeping the bears away. I said there aren't any bears here. They said, yes, exactly, that's thanks to them.”

And another:

“Children, the man on the TV is our Prime Minister. He leads us. The way it works is that we have checks and balances to make sure he behaves properly. And if he doesn't? He's in trouble. No, he's not in trouble. Does that mean he behaves properly? I..er..he..er..he...it's...er...”

And yet another:

“Grant Shapps on radio this morning defended Johnson with,  'We're all flawed'. This will come to be known as 'The Shapps Defence', to be used by criminals the world over. I propose, 'Give Putin a break. Go easy on him. We're all flawed.' #TheShappsDefence”

Then there’s his more usual:

“Dear Mogg

What is truth? I think we need to go to the British people with a modern definition, fit for purpose for today's world. We've lapsed into a rigid, top-down, quasi-Stalinist view that truth is about being true. We need something more flexible.

Veritas upmias

Boris”

Fixed penalty notices have gone out. Fines will be paid. They seem smaller than what was charged to offenders during lockdown! Or is that my version of false memory syndrome? Much speculation is going on about whether Johnson and Sunak will resign. Up to now, there seems to be no sign of it. They’re a bit slippery and, besides, who would replace them?

Interviews with the public include people who insist that Mr Johnson has been doing a good job (?) and that, in any case, we should not change leaders at present as we are at war! Well, no, actually, we are not at war! Ukraine is at war! We hope it won’t reach a point where we are in fact at war! And besides, the war is Ukraine has not prevented French presidential elections from taking place. It may have slowed down Macron’s campaigning but he seems to be back on track again now, seeing if he can keep Marine Le Pen at bay.

Putting all that to one side, we have got on with family stuff. Our small granddaughter came to play this morning, demanding her quota of visiting the grandparents on her own, maybe a little jealous of her small brother who does it weekly. A bit of craft work - stitching, clay modelling, etc and a bit of imaginative play. All good.

Tomorrow I need to get up and go for a dental checkup. The forms which they used to ask you to fill in on arrival at the clinic now arrive on your mobile phone. Not my favourite way of doing such things but I suppose it’s another way if dealing with Covid that we have all had to get used to.

Life goes on. Stay safe and well, everyone!
